Why Our Agents Live in the Cloud

Marc Andreessen wrote in 2011 that software was eating the world. Fifteen years later, software runs sales, hiring, finance, support, communication, and almost every other kind of work.

All of this software needs someone to operate it.

Every application comes with accounts, permissions, integrations, updates, and support. Information gets trapped in one tool and copied into another. When something breaks, a person has to notice, diagnose, and recover it. Much of modern office work consists of moving information between systems and keeping processes running.

The cost is significant. A 2025 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that 79% of planned federal IT spending went toward operating and maintaining existing systems. It is a public sector example, though the basic pattern appears everywhere. The more software we use, the more time we spend keeping it useful.

Our goal is to reduce this operational burden.

Ask an agent for a weekly pipeline report, and it should read the CRM, check recent emails, find important changes, and prepare the report. The user should receive the finished work instead of a set of instructions for producing it.

That goal influences where the agent runs.

A local agent often begins as a weekend project. You install the runtime, configure a model, and connect a few tools. Then you find a spare computer, keep it awake, manage API keys, install updates, and check logs when it stops responding.

Soon, the owner is maintaining a small server at home. Local agents make sense for people who want full control and enjoy building their own setup. Most people do not want another computer to maintain.

Remote access shows how quickly the work grows. An agent running at home sits behind a router and firewall. Reaching it from outside may require port forwarding, a tunnel, authentication, and changes to the network. If the ISP uses carrier grade NAT, changing the home router may not solve the problem.

A person can spend an afternoon making the agent reachable before it completes its first useful task.

We run our agents in the cloud so we can take responsibility for this work. We manage the runtime, networking, updates, security, and recovery. When we fix a problem, every user benefits. Scheduled work continues when the user closes their laptop. The agent remains available without a spare computer sitting on a desk.

Running in the cloud also gives us a consistent place to manage permissions and security. The agent can use isolated environments, request approval before sensitive actions, and leave a record of what it did. Users can revoke access without searching through configuration files on another machine.

The interface should stay familiar. People should be able to reach the agent through a basic web chat or through services they already use, such as Slack, iMessage, and Telegram. They describe what they need, answer questions when necessary, and review the result.

Useful work also requires access to the applications where information already lives. We have spent a lot of time connecting the agent to more than 3,000 SaaS applications.

This lets the agent read an inbox, update a CRM, prepare a document, and post the result without asking the user to move data between systems. A request can begin in chat and finish as a completed piece of work in the right application.

People already have enough software to maintain. The user should decide what needs to happen. The agent can handle the clicks, transfers, follow ups, and routine work required to make it happen.
